Bedford station cycle hub opens with Bikeep e-bike charging

Bedford station has a new cycle hub, opened in May 2022 by Bedford and Kempston MP Mohammad Yasin. It offers two-tier storage for up to 322 bikes, CCTV, and seven Bikeep e-bike charging docks, all free for commuters and cyclists.

Charging at the heart of the hub

The seven Bikeep docks were installed by APCOA a few months earlier, as part of its rollout of e-bike charging at Bedford and Harpenden stations. The cycle hub brings them together with large-scale storage, so riders can choose a standard rack or a dock that locks the bike and charges its battery while they travel. How the Bikeep docks work

• The dock holds the bike. A locking bar closes over the frame, so no lock is needed.
• Charging. Riders plug their own charger into the dock's locked compartment.
• App or card. Docks open with the Bikeep app or a contactless card.
• Alarm. Every dock sounds an alarm if someone tampers with a locked bike.

Train and bike together

Combining a train with a bike is one of the lowest-carbon ways to travel, and a secure hub at the station removes one of the main reasons people don't do it. The Bikeep docks at Bedford have since logged about 1,460 parkings by close to 100 different riders.
